Frequently Asked Questions
Acclimatization & Health
Yes, Leh town has well-equipped hospitals (including the Sonam Norboo Memorial Hospital) and military medical camps that specialize in altitude illnesses. Most hotels and tourist vehicles also carry emergency oxygen cylinders.
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) happens because of low oxygen levels at high altitudes (Leh sits at over 11,500 feet). To prevent it:
- Rest completely on Day 1: Do not skip this rule. Avoid sleeping during the day; just lounge.
- Stay hydrated: Drink 3–4 liters of water, electoral water, or soup daily.
- Medication: Consult your doctor before your trip about taking preventive medicine like Acetazolamide (Diamox).
Best Time & Permits
The ideal tourist season runs from late May to September. During these months, the highways (Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh) open up, the snow melts from the passes, and the weather is pleasantly cool during the day.
